M. Scott Hove’s “Cakeland”

M. Scott Hove's Cakeland

M. Scott Hove’s ongoing series of sculpture, which he calls “Cakeland,” is one of the most amazing things I’ve been in a while. After a very traumatic battle with Decotti day before last, it was wonderful to see these shocking beautiful (and dark) faux confections on his site, where you can view the Cakeland gallery in full. Update: the links were removed here because the website is now defunct.

Like Hove I too have always been mesmerized by fake food, which is largely behind my collections of Re-Ment and other miniatures. Here’s a blurb from his interview in Hi-Fructose 12:

The cake sprung from a weird fascination I have always had with fake food. I used to collect fake food, fake fires, ice cubes, etc. These objects have spectacularly absurd existence, are utterly fake, and people see them strictly for their illusion, not for what they are. I celebrate this absurd illusion with the cakes.

His “Iced Out” show features new pieces in the series and will be opening at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery on April 2nd 2010.
