“The Haunting of 124” was made for the “Served Cold” group show that opened at Pink Ghost on May 15th. With the theme of revenge in mind I decided to make the piece above, which measures approximately 8″ x 6.5″ x 3″ and is ready to hang.
“The Haunting of 124” is inspired by a combination of Greek mythology and Western Literature, specifically the myth of the harpies combined with Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The role of the harpies in classical myth was to avenge blood killings. They were, in a sense, some of the original agents of revenge in Western culture. I took this idea and filtered it through the iconic opening lines of Beloved, “124 was spiteful. Full of a baby’s venom.” Here Beloved is represented as a harpy, a traditional avenger, punishing her own murder.
