Doll Haul: MH Scarnival Draculaura and EAH Spring Unsprung Kitty Cheshire

Monster High Draculaura - Scarnival Editio

Monster High Draculaura – Scarnival Edition

I’ve been slowing down on my stock Monster High collection lately because I’ve been way more focused on building my custom doll collection, but I’ve been eyeing Scarnival Draculaura for weeks. While I was at Wal-Mart today doing super psychotically early Christmas shopping I decided to pick her up and I’m very happy that I did. She’s a basic release doll (aka no stand and cheaper) and she comes with a really cute outfit, heart heeled shoes, a plush bat, and a balloon game. Out of the box her hair was super soft, it seems like a totally different hair material than my other Draculauras too (Sweet Screams, Haunted, Monster Exchange, and Boo York Frightseers). I don’t really have a basic Draculaura so I’m happy to have Scarnival now. I almost bought the Scarnival boys too, but I don’t have any Mansters and I’m not really sure I want to start collecting them so … for now at least, it’s just the girls.

Ever After High Kitty Cheshire - Spring Unsprung Edition

Ever After High Kitty Cheshire – Spring Unsprung Edition

I’ve wanted the Spring Unsprung Kitty Cheshire since I started collecting Ever After High dolls (um, over the summer), and today the Haunted Wal-Mart by the Hauted Toys R Us that always gets new releases had two of her in stock, one of which didn’t have damaged makeup. I call them the Haunted stores because they 1) somehow always have both new and really old doll releases and full shelves and 2) the Toys R Us is in a huge plaza, far back from the road, where every other business is closed except them. Anyway, since the summer collecting frenzy I’ve decided to only collect Alice in Wonderland EAH dolls so Kitty Cheshires are allowed in the house. I was a little on the fence about it, but now I’m so glad I brought her home. I need to get an original release Lizzie Hearts and a Bunny Blanc (who I almost bought today at TRU) and the Wonderland collection is set. I’m hoping for a Spring Unspring Madeline Hatter and Bunny Blanc because it’s easily my favorite EAH series. The Kitty Cheshire above had some issues with her pigtails being a little ratty out of the box so I boil straightened them today. The vines around her shoes are asymmetrical too, but there are no huge flaws, which is great, especially because I don’t want to try and track down a store exclusive doll a year out (cough, Haunted Rochelle, cough).

Anyway, that’s today’s doll haul! A small one but I got some great girls. Three cheers for doll collecting!

Studio Fortnight: Craft Show Season Prep, Monster High, Perler Pokemon, and Zombuki

Studio September 7

It’s been two weeks since High School (work) and graduate school started up again for me and it’s been very hard to find studio time. I know the next few months will be crazy so I’m just trying to soldier ahead as best I can. Above is an older Pullip custom I decided to finish, Space Babe, inspired by Rudy Fig. She’s very different from my normal style and I tried to do more with pastel blushing and colored pencils in addition to my normal acrylic paint. She’s almost finished and I’ll put her up for adoption when she’s done. Because of the chalk pastel I need to seal her with MSC but Florida has a constant 80% humidity when it’s not flat out raining (at least that’s what it feels like). I worked so hard on her now I’m scared to seal her.

Studio September 7

Over the last few weeks I decided to go through my Monster High collection and get rid of a few dolls while reorganizing the rest. This is my “during” photo and everyone is almost organized now. They’re all out in our library, but the boys in the house keep touching them and messing up my meticulous arranging. They secretly love dolls, but are too manly to admit it, or so it seems. I’ve also been buying more custom dolls than stock dolls lately, have to support my doll customizing brothers and sisters, don’t you know.

Doll Haul: Monster High 13 Wishes Frankie, Exchange Lorna McNessie, and Fashion Scarah

Frankie Stein - 13 Wishes Haunt the Casbah Series

Frankie Stein – 13 Wishes Haunt the Casbah Series

First off, I think that 13 Wishes Haunt the Casbah Frankie Stein has got to have one of the longer titles of any of the Monster High dolls. Second, I was so happy and surprised to find this Frankie in a random Wal-Mart. It was the most surreal experience, they must have been cleaning their stock room, because there were a ton of older releases on the shelves with just one doll available. I walked around with eight dolls before narrowing it down and I’m separating the Monster High and Ever After High dolls into two Doll Haul posts because of it.

I’ve been eyeing this Frankie release for a while since it’s so beautiful and comes with great accessories. She seems to be full price online still, and I’ve had so many bad experiences buying MH off of eBay lately, that I was very happy to find her in person. The box was damaged, but that doesn’t matter to me, and she was on sale for $17. Her eyes have some slight paint flaws, but the hair and doll itself are both in good shape.

Spectra Vondergeist Ghouls Night Out Review and Restyle

Spectra Vondergeist Ghouls Night Out Illustration Spectra Vondergeist Ghouls Night Out

Spectra Vondergeist doesn’t seem like the most popular Monster High doll to me, instead of her older releases being sold out, they’re available cheaper than when they were new. Released in June 2013, Ghouls Night Out Spectra Vondergeist is available for $14 on Amazon, though if you wait I bought mine (still in the package) for $8 on eBay. I love Spectra’s clear hands/feet, oddly high cheekbones, purple hair (my favorite color), and most importantly of all, purple sclera. Spectra is the only Monster High doll with a non-white white of the eye and I feel like this, along with her gradient limbs, makes her especially unique. Below I’ll be sharing the photos I took of my re-styled Ghouls Night Out Spectra, reviewing the stock doll, and telling you how to re-style your doll the same way if you so choose. One of my readers suggested that I post these restyles, so thank you for the idea!

Spectra Vondergeist - Ghouls Night Out Series

Spectra Vondergeist – Ghouls Night Out Series

My GNO Spectra looks a lot different from the stock image above, but the only new addition is a Walking Dead print skirt from Lovely Woods on Etsy. The skirt took a long time to arrive, but it wasn’t expensive, and it’s very well made. I removed the accessories from Spectra that I thought were too much, added the skirt over her dress, and she was done. I also boil straightened her hair; out of the box her hair was a poofy mess, but boil straightening went a long way toward fixing that (and ruining it, read on). Without so much jewelry weighing her down, GNO Spectra is a much prettier doll. On to the review:
